Canine To Five is pleased to sponsor the Tour Detroit

Canine To Five is pleased to sponsor the eighth annual Tour de Troit, which will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2009, beginning at 10 a.m. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of biking as a mode of transportation, to publicize the growing greenways network in the region and to raise funds for the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink in Detroit, a project of the Greater Corktown Development Corporation.

Canine To Five will be offering all riders daycare the day of the Tour for HALF OFF!

The event is a leisurely, 30-mile, police escorted bike ride, which allows bike and city enthusiasts to explore Detroit’s historic areas and most breathtaking sights free of cars and traffic signs. The pace of the 30-miles ride will be approximately 10-12 miles per hour and helmets are mandatory. In case of mechanical problems, a SAG (support and gear) van will be present, as well as a “Sweeper Squad” of experienced cyclists.

Registration and sign-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Roosevelt Park in Corktown, in the shadow of Michigan Central Station. Coffee, carbohydrates and bike technicians will be available at that time, in preparation of the ride.

A short rest stop is planned at Gabriel Richard Park to allow riders to eat, drink and learn about The Villages Community. The ride will end at Roosevelt Park where cyclists can remain from 2-6 p.m. to enjoy music, food and drinks.

The cost is $30 per rider ($25 for students) and includes a tee-shirt if registration is confirmed prior to September 1. Pre-registration between September 1 and 11 is $30/$25 but does not include a tee-shirt. Pre-registration between September 12 and 18 is $35/$30. Day-of registration is $40/$35. A limited number of tee-shirts will be available for purchase on-site for anyone that registers in September.

Upcoming Dog Training at Canine To Five

We have several new classes coming up at Canine To Five, and we'd love to have you join us!

Our first class is our POTTY TRAINING SEMINAR this Thursday, August 13, at 7:30 p.m. Our Potty Training Seminar is a one-time one-hour session for people only covering all aspects of potty training a dog of any age. You will learn about how scheduling, feeding, and crating impacts your potty training success and troubleshoot any issues you and your dog may be having. The cost for this seminar is $12.

Our BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASS starts Wednesday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. This 6 week class meets for one hour every Wednesday, and the cost is $125. Basic Obedience covers simple behaviors such as sit, down, stay, come when called, walking on a loose leash, leave it, and drop it. Behavioral issues like chewing, jumping, and nipping are covered as well. In this course we aim for 100% reliability, which means that your dog listens to you the first time every time. The added distraction of the other dogs in class helps your dog learn to listen to you in any environment.

Our ADVANCED OBEDIENCE CLASS starts Tuesday, September 1, at 7:30 p.m. This 6 week class meets for one hour every Tuesday, and the cost is $110 for graduates of our BASIC class, and $130 for new training clients. In Advanced Obedience, you and your dog will learn more challenging behaviors like heel, wait, and place, and you will also increase the difficulty level of stay and come when called by adding more distance and distractions. In addition, you will also work on proofing the behaviors your dog already knows in order to maintain 100% reliability.

Our CANINE GOOD CITIZEN CLASS starts Tuesday, October 13. This 6 week class meets Tuesday nights from 7:30-9:00 p.m., and the cost is $110 for graduates of our ADVANCED class, and $130 for new training clients. The CGC class will prepare you and your dog to pass the AKC CGC test. With guidance in class and practice at home your dog should be able to pass the following 10 items beyond expectations:
Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger
Test 2: Sitting politely for petting
Test 3: Appearance and grooming
Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
Test 5: Walking through a crowd
Test 6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place
Test 7: Coming when called
Test 8: Reaction to another dog
Test 9: Reaction to distraction
Test 10: Supervised separation
For more details on the CGC test, please visit the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program page. The cost of this class includes a CGC test on the last day of class.
